EXPLOSIVE WELDING
Explosives contain a lot of energy. When harnessed properly, this energy can do work that no other method can do. With a little domestication, the energy can be engineered to bond metals together permanently, and with perfect consistency. Even widely dissimilar metals can be bonded this way.
However, the conventional method of explosive welding is cumbersome. The process is always pushing its limits as it tries to satisfy customer requirements for larger plate sizes and thinner clad layers. The Sigmabond team knew there had to be a better way, so they put their heads together to explore the intricacies of how metals behave under the influence of explosives, and the behaviour of explosives themselves. Extensive research produced a thorough understanding of the mechanics of explosive metallurgy. A number of process improvements and new material combinations came forth from this new knowledge. These innovations are waiting commercial development by the right industry partner. Below, some of these prospective materials are shown.
Amongst all the achievements, the greatest is titanium clad steel. The new method for producing this material is a quantum leap improvement in the technology. If there ever was a game-changer, this would be it.
